Our goal is to bring people into motorcycling and give them the skills to ride safely and enjoy riding into the future.
Mainland Motorcycle School is a Christchurch based privately owned motorcycle school. It was originally part of Mainland Driving School, but Mike Flowers, bought out the motorcycle part of the business in December 2010, and it is now solely devoted to motorcycle training.

We are not car instructors that can also teach motorcycles. All the instructors are motorcycle riders that have a huge passion for bikes and most come from a road racing background.

Mainland Motorcycle School is always monitoring local and international trends in motorcycle training to ensure it remains current with the best training programs available, therefore Mainland’s’ e courses may vary or adapt from time to time, but they can also be tailored to your individual needs or those of clubs or groups.

We offer specialist motorcycle trainers, and will offer you the best training you can get for beginners needing a learners licence through to road training for intermediate and advanced riders and advanced road riding skills taught on the race track.

The practical part of your Learners Licence

The first step to getting your motorcycle learners licence is to obtain your Basic Handling Certificate with us. This is a practical test completed on a fully geared bike. The price varies depending on the amount of training required to meet the standard to pass. Below is a list of options to choose from designed for ones that have never ridden before right through to those that are currently riding and are already skilled on a motorcycle.

Novice Course

Motorcycle training for novice riders on their learners licence.

Designed for newly licenced riders.

This novice course (3 hours) is to help you raise your skills and knowledge from from Basic Handling Skills Test level, to a level you can ride on a road and is a great stepping stone towards our more advanced courses and your restricted licence.

The Basic Handling Test may allow you to get your learners licence, but the test does not require you to ride over 20kph, and you don’t have to use any more than the first two gears. At that speed you have not even gone fast enough to know how a bike corners (counter steering), different ways of down shifting or the speed to ride on the road etc. The Basic Handling Skills Test does not give you the skills to ride on a road.

What happens on the course?

Part One

It starts working on skills required to ride on the road in our huge off-road training area. Different ways of gear changing, cornering, braking, counter steering, parking and more in a large car park, building up your skills and confidence.

Part Two

The second part we use the roads that are closed off to general public, (so very quiet) in our training area to practice what is required to ride on roads with normal traffic. Take offs, indicator use, control in corners etc. This is a great chance for both you and the instructor to work out if you have enough skills to ride on a normal road with the public.

Part Three

We cover road positioning, hazard detection, scanning techniques, and basic defensive riding skills before taking you out on a normal road with traffic. We only take you on the road with traffic if both you and the instructor feels you will be safe. If you do not feel confident enough, or we are not sure of your safety, we use the 3 hours in our training area and can book you in for the road section another day.
